President Donald Trump has tweeted a letter him from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un heralding "epochal progress" in US-North Korea relations.

As part of their agreement, Kim pledged to abandon the nuclear weapons his country developed to deter a potential invasion, while Trump has said he would guarantee Kim's security, ultimately lift sanctions and potentially establish an official peace in a decades-long conflict on the Korean Peninsula.

He also says that bilateral trust should be "further strengthened in the future process of taking practical actions".

Kim expressed deep appreciation for "the energetic and extraordinary efforts made by Your Excellency Mr. President and for the improvement of relations between the two countries and the faithful implementation of the joint statement". Great progress being made!'

"The road ahead will be hard and challenging and we know that critics will try to minimize the work that we've achieved", he said.

The meeting was about returning the remains of American soldiers from the Korean War.

A USA official waited at the border of the village but no North Korean official showed up, according to South Korea's Yonhap news agency.

But North Korea's delegation failed show up to a scheduled meeting on Thursdayat the inter-Korean truce village of Panmunjom in the Demilitarized Zone between the two Koreas.

Mr Pompeo had said a Pentagon team would meet with the North's officials on or around Thursday at the inter-Korea border to discuss the repatriation.

The letter is dated July 6.

"We will be ready", USA state department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said. Roughly 5,300 USA troops presumed to have been killed in the Korean war are unaccounted for. Some are pilots who were shot down, some are ground troops, others may be those who died in prisoner-of-war camps.

Following the North Koreans' no-show at Thursday's meeting, the U.S. state department said the two delegations had agreed to meet on 15 July.

While the details are unclear, a setback on talks over the remains wouldn't bode well for broader negotiations about North Korea's nuclear program.

The letter contrasts with a statement put out on July 7 by an unnamed North Korean official saying that Washington's attitude and stance were "regrettable" and that the United States "came up only with its unilateral and gangster-like demand for denuclearization".
