Pres. Trump announces pick for Supreme Court nominee

Anti-abortion activists demonstrate in front of the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington Monday Capito looking for Supreme Court nominee similar to Gorsuch

Protesters decrying President Trump's Supreme Court nomination blocked traffic outside of Trump Tower Monday night, leading to the arrest of seven people, law enforcement sources said. Raymond Kethledge is a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit who has been dubbed "Gorsuch 2.0".

In October of past year, Kavanaugh was part of the D.C. Court of appeals that ultimately ruled on an immigrant girl's right to have an abortion while she was in USA custody.

Stephanopoulos also asked Leo about an argument by some Democrats, including Blumenthal, that no new justice should be appointed until after special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation is finished because it would be improper for the president to nominate someone who may have jurisdiction over the probe.

Republicans are eager to have a new justice in place when the Supreme Court begins its new term in October. "There's no way to sugarcoat it", said Dawn Laguens, Planned Parenthood executive vice president. A former White House aide under Bush who previously worked for Kenneth Starr, the independent counsel who investigated Democratic former President Bill Clinton in the 1990s, he faced a long confirmation battle when Bush nominated him to his current post. He nominated Neil Gorsuch a year ago, who was confirmed. Those who would limit or end abortion praised the choice, while those who aim to expand and preserve abortion rights were critical. Dozens of additional nominations are pending - a list that will soon include Trump's second nominee for the highest court in the land. The decision would have allowed the government to delay the abortion while it sought a sponsor for the teen, but was reversed when appealed to the full appeals court, where Kavanaugh also wrote a dissent.

"Well, they're going to be completely in concert with President Trump's promise to only appoint biased judges who will overturn Roe".

The process is arduous, with the private meetings giving way to days of testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, which has 11 Republicans and 10 Democrats. This isn't the first time he's helped nominees get through the Senate.

This is one reason that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., reportedly tried to nudge POTUS away from naming him. But with only 49 votes in the Senate, Democrats have few tools to work with.

Trump is scheduled to announce a nominee at 9 p.m. Monday.

Trump spoke to reporters Sunday afternoon before returning to Washington from a weekend at his private golf club in New Jersey, where he deliberated his decision amid furious lobbying and frenzied speculation.

Civil rights leaders were quick to vehemently oppose his nomination, arguing Kavanaugh will be a vote to gut ObamaCare and Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that legalized abortion.

The nominee is an only child who credits his mother for his career path. Martha Kavanaugh taught high school history before returning to school for her law degree. Both are conservative jurists in the mold of Trump's previous Supreme Court pick, Gorsuch. President Donald Trump: "Well, it's still-let's say it's the four people, but-and they're excellent, every one".

On the Democratic side, the focus will be on Sens.

"Judge Kavanaugh has impeccable credentials, unsurpassed qualifications and a proven commitment to equal justice under the law", he said separately, adding later: "This incredibly qualified nominee deserves a swift confirmation and robust, bipartisan support". Jennifer Mascott, a law professor at the Antonin Scalia Law School in Virginia, said she naturally reached out to Kavanaugh after her father died. "But this is really about the process and whether or not the corporate right is going to be in charge of picking the Supreme Court in a seat, in a nomination that's likely to tip the scales substantially".
