On Wednesday, Okoumou climbed the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty and began a three-hour standoff that led to the evacuation of the landmark on the Fourth of July holiday, celebrating USA independence.

But members of the group said they had no idea she was going to scale the statue that day.

Earlier in the day, activists with the group Rise and Resist unfurled a banner nearer to the ground reading "Abolish I.C.E".

ICE, or the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, is at the center of the Trump administration's shelved policy of separating some immigrant families at the U.S.

Rise and Resist says the climber had "has no connection to our #abolishice action earlier today". While on the statue, she lay by the bottom edge of the statue's robe, walked around and sat perched against the national monument.

Many are praising her actions, calling them a step toward actual change.

Okoumou was ultimately escorted down by police after a roughly four-hour standoff. The call forced the evacuation of Liberty Island, sending 3,200 people on boats back to lower Manhattan and New Jersey.

Therese Patricia Okoumou, 45, of Staten Island, was charged with trespassing, disorderly conduct and interference with governmental administration, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Police climbed after the woman, positioning ladders and negotiators in the hopes of talking her down. At other times she was seen lying on her stomach and kicking her feet up behind her. Okoumou was holding a t-shirt that says "Rise and Resist" and 'Trump Care Makes Us Sick.' Visitors were taken off the island via ferry.

A court appearance is expected sometime Thursday.

ICE stands for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and has been the target of numerous protests across the United States since the Trump administration began separating thousands of children from their families as they tried to cross the Mexico border illegally.

"I would have said let's get some nets, we'll wait 'til she....just get some nets", he said.

The parks service, which operates the Statue of Liberty National Park, could not confirm whether the woman was part of a protest, Somma said.
