Child killed after bouncy castle 'explodes' in Norfolk

Young girl dies after being thrown from bouncy castle Police cordoned off the scene
| 04 July, 2018, 07:08

The death of a four-year-old girl who was reportedly thrown from a bouncy castle after it exploded has prompted an MP to call for a temporary ban on inflatables in public areas.

Despite the efforts of people at the scene and medical personnel, the girl was pronounced dead at a hospital, the East of England Ambulance Service said.

The bouncy castle was located on the Lower Esplanade in a children's play area.

Witnesses said they heard a loud bang and saw the child being "catapulted" into the air.

The bouncy castle "exploded" while the youngster was on it, throwing her "20 ft in the air", according to eyewitness claims.

Crowds had flocked to Gorleston, a popular beach destination for families, as the area was experiencing a heat wave.

She later died in hopsital, police confirmed in a statement several hours later.

Any witnesses to the Gorleston incident who have not yet spoken to the police, or anyone who may have captured the incident on their phone or camera, is asked to call Norfolk Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. The young female was seriously injured and in cardiac arrest on our arrival, and was conveyed to James Paget Hospital.

"A parent myself, I can't imagine the grief being experienced by the family during this hard time".

An inflatable slide, along with a traditional trampoline, had also been in operation in the same "Bounce About" play area on the day.

A joint investigation into the death of the girl - who was visiting the beach with her family from Suffolk - has been launched by police and the Health and Safety Executive.
