Paula Godwin, from Anthem, Arizona, was on a hike Friday morning when she nearly stepped on the unsafe viper, she wrote in a Facebook post.

Todd and his owner, Paula Godwin, were out and about early for a hike near 7th Street and the Carefree Highway Friday.

"My hero of a puppy Todd saved me", she said in her Facebook post.

Instead, the snake bit Todd in the face, and Godwin was uninjured.

"He for sure saved me from being bitten", Godwin said. What a fearless boy!

The puppy's face was very swollen in the pictures taken afterward, but the owner says he will be fine. Less than 20 minutes later, they arrived at an animal hospital, where Todd received antivenom. Thankfully, Godwin had a guardian angel in Todd.

Heroic pup. Todd is home and back to being a puppy again, according to his owner Paula Godwin.

I'm literally looking at mine as I type this and wondering if he knows just how many times a day he makes me smile and laugh, usually by doing something unthinkably cute for the former and unspeakably stupid for the latter.

She added that if it was her choice, "I would have much rather been bitten by the snake". "This is what a hero looks like". "He jumped right in front of my leg [where] I surely would have [been] bit". She said her courageous dog is doing "so well", and she is amazed by how quickly he is recovering from the potentially-deadly bite.
