Trump to announce Supreme Court pick on July 9

Conservative lawyers steer Trump on Supreme Court pick Poll: Two-thirds of Americans oppose reversing Roe vs. Wade

President Donald Trump on Friday said he'd announce his pick to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy on July 9 and that he's now working to narrow down his shortlist of about five candidates.

Kennedy's retirement will give Trump the opportunity to appoint his second justice and reshape the nation's highest court for generations.

Kennedy, 81, the court's now longest-serving member and second-oldest justice, announced on Wednesday that he is retiring, effective on July 31.

Trump has said he will select a nominee from a list of 25 names, many of them judges on federal and state courts across the country.

Ninety percent of Democrats said the vacancy would make them more likely to vote for a Democratic Senate candidate in the November 6 election, compared with 81 percent of Republicans who said the issue would make them more likely to vote for a Senate candidate from their party. But other factors will also be in play as the candidates are vetted: their ideological bent, their ability to win confirmation and even whether, according to a key adviser, they are "not weak".

During his more than three decades on the Supreme Court, the justice would break from his fellow conservatives on the bench and side with the court's liberal justices on social issues, such as legalizing gay marriage and protecting legal abortion. The question brought harsh criticism from leading Catholics and a sharp rejoinder from Barrett: "It's never appropriate for a judge to impose that judge's personal convictions, whether they arise from faith or anywhere else, on the law". He met Thursday with key Republican and Democratic senators at the White House in the evening to discuss the vacancy. Asked if he planned to question potential court nominees their views on abortion rights and Roe v. Wade, he responded, "That's not a question I'll be asking". Mike Lee (R-Utah).

"The fact that there's a modest enthusiasm disadvantage isn't all that meaningful because there's already an enthusiasm gap for Republicans", he said, noting Democratic anger towards Trump. "I actually saw him on television last night where he said he'd love the job".

In the wise words of Maya Angelou, "When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time".

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told a GOP gathering in Kentucky that the goal is to wrap up the confirmation in time for the nominee to join the court at the start of its next term in October. In the Trump administration, Kavanaugh's biggest booster is White House counsel Don McGahn.

"We'd be very happy if he'd pick any name on that list", said Severino. "What we're seeing here is Gorsuch 2.0".

Senate Democrats are calling to delay the vote until after the midterm elections, but McConnell has rejected their call and there is little Democrats can do to ultimately delay a vote.

Divisive Supreme Court decisions are more likely to be re-examined - and possibly overturned - when a court changes.
