Almost 600 activists, protesting Donald Trump's "zero-tolerance" policy against illegal immigrants, have been arrested after staging an occupy sit-in at the Hart Senate Office building in the nation's capital.

The protest was organized and promoted by Women's March, the same group that mounted a massive protest effort past year shortly after President Donald Trump took office.

She said in a video posted on social media that she had joined the action to protest "the inhumane and cruel "zero tolerance" policy of Donald Trump and this administration, the separation of families, the caging of children, and the imprisonment of asylum seekers".

Protesters loudly chanted "What do we want?"

Saturday's rallies are the latest in a series of protests against the Trump administration's immigration policies.

Democrat Senators Kristen Gillibrand and Elizabeth Warren, both likely presidential candidates in 2020, and number of other elected officially fully participated.

The women first demonstrated outside the Justice Department before marching to the Capitol, where they took over the atrium and mezzanine of the Hart Senate Office Building. They were processed on the scene and released.

"This is far beyond politics", Jayapal said.

Hundreds of children remain separated from their parents in shelters throughout the US. So did the Democrats Kirsten Gillibrand of NY and Edward Markey of MA.

You can find more information about the rally on the event's website. ICE, of course, refers to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.
