Two die in Zimbabwe blast

Zimbabwe's president Mnangagwa survives assassination attempt at rally in Harare Explosion rocks stadium where Zimbabwe's president was speaking

Mnangagwa said he was the target of the attack, which also injured Vice-Presidents Kembo Mohadi and Constantino Chiwenga.

A blast that rocked a rally in which Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa narrowly escaped unscathed injured at least 41 people, including his two deputies, the health minister told a state Sunday paper. Mugabe has said he felt betrayed by Mnangagwa, a former protege, and has called his presidency illegal.

State television ZBC said 42 people were injured in the explosion, six of them seriously.

Chipo Dendere, a Zimbabwean professor of political science at Amherst College in the U.S., said the incident would change the tone of the election campaign.

Worldwide observers are in the country for the first time since 2002 and, if they endorse the conduct of the ballot, it could help Zimbabwe secure funding from global institutions for the first time in two decades.

The Foreign Ministry stressed that Egypt stands by the brotherly people and government of Zimbabwe and their efforts to achieve stability and safety in their country.

Medics attend to people injured in an explosion during a rally by Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe June 23, 2018. "We are not used to this kind of violence". Allegations of violence and fraud marked past votes.

Presidential and parliamentary elections in Zimbabwe are scheduled for July 30, the first since longtime leader Robert Mugabe stepped down in November under military pressure.

This time around, Mnangagwa has pledged to hold free and fair elections as he seeks to mend global relations and have sanctions against Zimbabwe dropped.

In neighbouring South Africa, President Cyril Ramaphosa condemned the "barbaric and cowardly" attack.

Plain-clothes police conducted random stop-and-search operations on the streets of Bulawayo while armed police mounted check points along the main highway leading out of the city.

Zimbabwe police spokeswoman Charity Charamba said "comprehensive investigations are in progress" into the blast.
