They posed for photos with their new baby girl Neve Te Aroha Ardern Gayford on June 24, 2018 in Auckland, New Zealand. She thanked hospital staff for her care.

Although she will become the first elected world leader to take maternity leave - and only the second to have a child while in office - Ms Ardern has played down the significant global attention she's received as a role model.

Ardern and Gayford said they kept a shortlist of names before they settled on the two names that they thought best fit the newest member of their family.

She said the couple struggled for months trying to choose a name and chose to wait until the baby was born to figure out which one fitted best.

They began by announcing the baby would be called Neve Te Aroha Ardern Gayford - or Neve Gayford for short.

She and Mr Gayford had opted to spell the name Neve - as opposed to Niamh, for example - for simplicity, with Ms Ardern joking about the unusual spellings of Clarke and Jacinda.

"Over the next six weeks we'll do what every other parent does and learn the little nuances ... and just figure things out as we go".

Ardern's partner Clarke Gayford spent Thursday night with Ardern at the hospital.

Ardern said Neve means "bright" and "radiant" as well as "snow", which was fitting because the baby was born on the Southern Hemisphere's winter solstice.

"And that it's generally accepted, not just that women can make choices, but actually that men can too", Ardern added, referring to Gayford, who was standing beside her.

He plans to become the primary caregiver for the child when Ardern returns to work following a leave of six weeks.

Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters is filling in for Ardern while she is on parental leave.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has left hospital after giving birth to a baby girl.

"The baby was looking up at Jacinda and it looked like she was in awe of her and I couldn't get over how alert it was just after being born", she said.

Ardern is admirable because she has reached the pinnacle of leadership, without sacrificing personal joys like marriage and parenthood.

Gayford is a radio and TV broadcaster, and the host of the fishing documentary show, "Fish of the Day".

On Sunday, the little baby made her first public appearance at Auckland City Hospital, appearing to sleep soundly as her parents answered a few questions for waiting reporters.
