Stutzman's attorney, Kristen Waggoner of the Alliance Defending Freedom, said Ferguson has acted similarly to the Colorado commission by disparaging Stutzman's beliefs and "punishing her" by suing her personally.

Last week, as WND reported, an OR couple forced to shut down its bakery because of crippling state fines for refusing to make a wedding cake for two women has appealed its case to the U.S. Supreme Court in light of the Phillips ruling.

The Supreme Court signaled Monday that it is unwilling to immediately answer whether a business owner's religious beliefs can justify refusing gay couples seeking wedding services. "The state of Washington, acting through its attorney general, has shown similar hostility here".

Stutzman knew that Ingersoll was gay and had always been happy to create flower arrangements for him for birthdays and other special occasions.

In that case, the highest court ruled 7-2 that the Colorado Civil Rights Commission had acted with "impermissible hostility toward the honest religious beliefs that motivated his objection".

"The Washington State Supreme Court now has the job of determining whether the U.S. Supreme Court ruling affects this case", he said.

Robert Ingersoll and his partner Curt Freed had been customers at her flower shop for years, but Stutzman told them she wouldn't provide wedding flowers because of her "relationship with Jesus Christ".

Joan Mannix, special counsel at the Thomas More Society, said the "proceedings in the courts of Washington were tainted with the same kind of intolerance and disrespect for the constitutionally protected free exercise of religion as those that occurred in Colorado".

The Supreme Court's 7-2 ruling in favor of Denver-area baker Jack Phillips left significant legal issues unresolved that the justices potentially could have addressed had they taken up the florist case.

The nation's highest court on Monday announced it will not take up the case of Brendan Dassey, a central figure in the Netflix series that suggests he was wrongfully convicted for murder when he was a teen.

"The Court today goes out of its way to permit the State of Texas to use maps that the three-judge District Court unanimously found were adopted for the objective of preserving the racial discrimination that tainted its previous maps", wrote Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

"We are confident that the [Washington] court will again see that no business should have a right to discriminate".

In the baker ruling, the court's five conservatives were joined by two liberals in issuing a narrow decision written by Justice Anthony Kennedy limited to the facts in that particular case.

Under federal law, the Supreme Court is to largely defer to decisions made by lower courts and to intervene only if the decision by the state court was unreasonable. "Our work to ensure LGBT equality is the law and the norm in all 50 states will continue".
