On Capitol Hill, in yet another abrupt reversal by the president, Trump on Friday told fellow Republicans in Congress to "stop wasting their time" on immigration legislation until after the November elections.

Mr Trump, faced with a public outcry over his policy that separated children from their migrant parents at the USA border with Mexico, tried to refocus the immigration debate on Congress in a series of posts on Twitter.

The president wrote: "Even if we get 100% Republican votes in the Senate, we need 10 Democrat votes to get a much needed Immigration Bill - & the Dems are Obstructionists who won't give votes for political reasons & because they don't care about Crime coming from Border!"

Mr Trump has often chafed at this, which also leaves his party vulnerable to dissent by just one or two Republican senators.

President Donald Trump has vowed to secure United States' global borders and prevent people from illegally entering America, and said that he wants only those based on merit to come inside the country, amid a major immigration row.

Avenatti, who has made headlines representing porn star Stormy Daniels in an unrelated lawsuit against Trump, said Merida-Galicia is among more than 60 immigrant parents he represents and 80 percent of them do not know where their children are.

Following that vote, House Republican leaders abruptly postponed voting on a compromise immigration measure amid ongoing infighting between conservative and moderates.

President Donald Trump listens during an event on immigration alongside family members affected by crime committed by undocumented immigrants, at the South Court Auditorium in the White House complex, June 22, 2018, in Washington. Some parents said they didn't even know where their children were. The bill largely follows immigration principles issued by the White House in January, providing $25 billion for Trump's long-sought border wall, scaling back legal immigration and giving young undocumented immigrants a shot at citizenship.

In a press conference on Thursday, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi called the compromise bill a "compromise with the devil".

Federal immigration courts faced a backlog of more than 700,000 cases in May, according to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, or TRAC, at Syracuse University.

Trump's comments, in a morning tweet, came after Republican House leaders abruptly postponed a vote Thursday on a broad immigration bill meant to unite GOP moderates and conservatives, acknowledging they lack the votes to pass the measure despite the growing uproar over separating migrant families at the border.

The House voted 193-231 to defeat a bill by Rep. CNN then returned to coverage of illegal immigrant families being separated after crossing the U.S. border.

While Trump stresses the importance of securing the border, efforts in Congress to pass a sweeping immigration bill are faltering.

"Media reports alleging SDTX cases were dropped or dismissed are inaccurate and misleading", the office said in its statement, referring to the Southern District of Texas.

Meanwhile, the administration continued to scramble to modify its "zero tolerance" policy that was announced at the border in April and has led to the separation of more than 2,000 families.

"Game over", said Representative Mark Sanford, a Republican critic of Trump who came under withering attack from the president before losing his primary race this month.

After a week on his heels, Donald Trump has begun his counterattack.

"We're not giving up", No. 3 House GOP leader Steve Scalise, R-La said. If Democrats take control of the House, they are unlikely to approve that wall funding.

"She said she never wants to come back, and that this experience has been so traumatizing", Cortes Romero said.

But the central piece of Trump's attempts to counter-program against the despairing images at the border was to stand with the "angel families", as he did repeatedly during his presidential campaign, including at the 2016 Republican National Convention. Trump backed off by signing an executive order this week allowing families to stay together during these proceedings, while the status of such enforcement efforts remains unclear.
