President Trump calls Manafort jailing unfair

Манафорт получил VIP-камеру в американской тюрьме- СМИ Judge jails ex-Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort pending trial, citing obstruction charges

He was taken to the 500-bed facility hours after prosecutors working for Special Counsel Robert Mueller convinced Judge Amy Berman Jackson that Manafort couldn't be trusted on house arrest any longer.

In a superseding indictment, the prosecutors claimed that Manafort and a close associate, Konstantin V. Kilimnik, had contacted the two witnesses this year, hoping to persuade them to testify that Manafort had never lobbied in the United States for Viktor F. Yanukovych, the pro-Moscow President of Ukraine who fled to Russian Federation in 2014 after a popular uprising. His trial on related charges in Virginia is set for July.

"Wow, what a tough sentence for Paul Manafort", Trump wrote on Twitter even though Manafort has not been sentenced - he has not been convicted on any of the charges.

In asking for Manafort to be jailed, prosecutor Greg Andres said in court that there was a danger Manafort would continue to commit crimes.

But she couldn't "turn a blind eye" to his conduct or ensure he would abide by her orders if he remained on house arrest.

The filing marks the second time that Mueller's team has accused Manafort of violating a judge's order in the case.

The distinction matters because unregistered foreign lobbying in the U.S.is a crime, while lobbying exclusively in Europe would be outside the special counsel's jurisdiction.

Manafort has repeatedly declared his intention to fight the charges in both jurisdictions, with his lawyers saying that he is being wrongly prosecuted for financial activities that have nothing to do with collusion to affect the election.

Manafort, 69, earlier on June 15 had pleaded not guilty to the charges in an arraignment before the judge. They filed a memo written by one of the witnesses for Manafort that his attorneys say shows the work of the group, known as the Hapsburg group, was European focused. One of the documents was a 2013 memo from Mr Manafort to former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych. She also refused to lay out which witnesses were off-limits.

Manafort's already been charged in a series of indictments by Mueller on counts ranging from money laundering and bank fraud to tax evasion and failing to register as a foreign agent.

Manafort turned around briefly to wave to his wife before heading out a door at the back of the crowded courtroom, witnesses said. "I can't just take your phone". Around that same time, Manafort's co-defendant and longtime business associate, Rick Gates, pleaded guilty and agreed to co-operate with prosecutors.

The indictment accused them of attempting to call, text and send encrypted messages starting in February to two people from a political discussion group - the so-called Hapsburg Group - that worked with Manafort to promote Ukraine´s interests in a bid to sway their testimony.
