New Tory Brexit bust-up puts May under threat again

Theresa May’s frantic search for the perfect Brexit compromise Theresa May fails to appease Tory rebels on EU Withdrawal Bill

Tory MP Sarah Wollaston, who had planned to rebel on Tuesday but was bought off by the Prime Minister, took to Twitter to express her disappointment.

She explained how in the week beginning July 9 the UK Government would publish a White Paper on Brexit, setting out in more detail its ambition for a future relationship with the EU.

"It's also important that Parliament can not and should not overturn the will of the British people, which was to leave the European Union".

"Parliament must be given a meaningful vote on all possible outcomes of Brexit - and this must be guaranteed in writing".

Brussels/London. The European Union's "contradictory" decision to maintain a hard-nosed approach to Britain's participation in its Galileo satellite navigation system could cripple the bloc's entire security operation if an agreement on UK cooperation is not reached, the british eurosceptic newspaper The Daily Express writes.A UK Government source revealed there will be monstrous "operational gaps" left by Brexit unless an agreement can be agreed on future cooperation in all areas of the EU's security. The European Commission, who are negotiating Britain's exit on behalf of the EU, have really tightened the screws on British participation in Galileo - Brussels' satellite navigation programme created to rival the US-run global positioning system. As a result of Brexit, the UK would lose access to Galileo's Private Regulated Service - an encrypted signal for use by member states' military and emergency services. However, as things stand now, they will not be able to send the government back into negotiations if they reject an agreement with the EU.

Speaking on BBC's Westminster Hour, Mr Lammy referenced the Government's meaningful vote amendment to the EU Withdrawal Bill, which was amended last minute, and said: "Here we are yet again".

He added: "At some point there will be a reckoning: either with a cobbled-together Brexit deal or if the negotiations fail".

In a tense atmosphere where it was not clear which way the vote would go, the government secured its victory only after offering concessions to one of the leaders of a group of Conservative lawmakers who were threatening to vote against May.

Dominic Grieve
The UK's plan for Brexit has just suffered another major blow

Mr Grieve previously tabled his own proposals, which would have allowed Parliament to dictate the next steps the Government should take if no deal was reached by the end of February.

Potential rebels in the Conservative party met the Prime Minister last week as she tried to prevent the House of Commons voting through an amendment which would allow a vote on a "no deal" Brexit.

"This needs to be resolved", Andrew Bridgen, a pro-Brexit Conservative lawmaker, told Reuters.

He said it was unlikely that MPs would reject the Government's final deal with the European Union in January 2019, or that no deal is reached. "It's a test of her authority in front of Parliament, it's a test of cabinet unity and it's a test of her ability to be all things to all men".

There is little May can do.

Both houses of Parliament must agree the final wording before it can become law, but results in the lower house, where May rules with the support of a small Northern Irish party, are more consequential for her leadership.

In a day of drama, May's position seemed suddenly weaker when junior justice minister Phillip Lee, who has always been critical of Brexit strategy, resigned and said he would vote against the government.

In the House of Commons on Thursday morning, Labor's Brexit spokesman Sir Keir Starmer pressed Brexit Secretary David Davis on seemingly conflicting accounts of what the would-be rebels were offered.
