A USA drone strike killed the head of the Pakistani Taliban in Afghanistan's eastern Konar province, Afghan officials said Friday, eliminating a notorious insurgent commander who had ordered attacks on schoolchildren in Pakistan, including future Nobel Peace Prize victor Malala Yousafzai.

A spokesperson for the Afghan Defense Ministry told several media outlets Fazlullah was killed in Thursday's strike in Afghanistan.

Radmanish said the drone attack took place in Marawara district, near the border.

Earlier Friday reliable sources told TOLOnews that Fazlullah had been killed in Kunar Province in Afghanistan.

Pakistan's military refused to comment on the report of Fazlullah's death saying any information would have to come from Washington.

Analysts see the killing of Pakistan's most wanted militant as a large confidence-building measure vis-a-vis Pakistan's otherwise sour relations with the USA and Afghanistan.

However, he did not reveal the identity of the target or the name of the group.

As we've seen with al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups, cutting off the head of the snake is useful but not decisive.

He said the militant was killed in a US drone strike Thursday night in the Marawara district of the eastern province of Kunar, close to the Pakistan border.

They are separate from the Afghan Taliban who ruled Afghanistan for five years before being ousted in a 2001 US-led military action. The US attack was in collaboration with Afghan forces.

"We hope this pause leads to dialogue and progress on reconciliation and a lasting end to hostilities".

Fazlullah and his commanders were having an Iftar party at a compound when a remotely piloted United States aircraft targeted them, the report quoted a source as saying.

The news follows a meeting between Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa, Pakistan's powerful army chief, and Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on Tuesday during a visit to Kabul amid renewed efforts for resuming the peace process.

"He was not killed randomly and doubtless it is good day and good news for Pakistan", Zaman Gul Dehati, director of Peace and Development Organization.

Fazlullah, believed to be in his forties, was wanted to Pakistan for years-long reign of terror in which thousands of civilians and security personnel were martyred.

In a statement released by the TTP, the group acknowledged its leader had been killed.

Fazlullah, regarded in Pakistan as a particularly ruthless militant, was widely reviled for ordering a bloody attack on a Pakistani army school in December 2014 in the northwestern city of Peshawar.

The TPP was also deemed responsible for the October 2012 shooting of Malala Yousafzai, who later won the Nobel Prize and became a global symbol of the fight for the education of girls.
