Your internet use could change as 'net neutrality' ends

Getting rid of those net neutrality rules will remove strict government oversight and simply require internet providers to inform the public about their practices.

The Federal Communications Commission's repeal of the net neutrality rules took effect today, leaving broadband providers in most states free to censor sites and slow down apps. The repeal takes effect Monday.

The regulations required internet providers to treat all lawful traffic the same, without creating paid premium lanes for some services or slowing others. Under that approach, the internet was open and free. Comcast, for example, has changed its stated commitments concerning net neutrality and no longer mentions anything about paid prioritization, otherwise known as fast lanes.

Groups taking the FCC's side in the case include CTIA, representing mobile providers AT&T, Verizon, Sprint Corp. and T-Mobile US Inc.; and NCTA - The Internet & Television Association, representing cable carriers such as Comcast Corp. and Charter Communications Inc. Pai, a Republican, who voted against the 2015 rules enacted under an Obama-era FCC, was appointed chairman by President Trump in January 2017.

The change comes as broadband and cellphone providers expand their efforts to deliver video and other content to consumers. Essentially, users and consumers of the internet will not be charged more for faster or better speeds, instead, the accessible quality and quantity of the internet will be the same for everyone.

Net neutrality has overwhelming public support, noted industry experts. We had Chairman Ajit Pai on to talk about what will change, how he measures success and what happens if his vision for an open internet doesn't work.

Washington became the first state to set up their own net neutrality requirements in March when Governor Jay Inslee signed a measure with bipartisan support.

"There will be no eulogy today for net neutrality", said Sen. The 2016 election, with its broad abstention by the working class amid widespread hostility to Hillary Clinton, the favored candidate of Wall Street, and the subsequent strike movement by teachers independently of the unions, has made clear to the ruling elite that the imposition of internet censorship is necessary for the defense of its domination of society.

"If the companies decide we don't like this particular organization or what they stand for so we're not going to let it go out to the people that we provide services to". They will have the right to discriminate and favor the Internet traffic of those companies with whom they have pay-for-play arrangements and the right to consign all others to a slow and bumpy road.

More than 20 states have sued the FCC to stop the repeal.

Martin said broadband providers probably won't mess with existing services like Netflix, as that could alienate consumers. Those programs allow consumers to access certain sites and services without the data to and from them applying to any monthly caps they may have. In Montana and NY, governors signed executive orders that uphold the Obama-era net neutrality regulations.
