USA net neutrality rules expire, court battle looms

Net Neutrality Ends Tomorrow, FCC On Track To Remove Rules As Scheduled Net Neutrality Officially Expired. Now States Are Passing Their Own Laws

Pai told CBS that he doesn't believe regulating the internet in the same way phone networks are regulated is the best way to achieve the goal of a "free and open" internet.

Net neutrality rules enacted under former President Barack Obama expired Monday, completing a move previous year by the Federal Communications Commission to end the protections. "They will have the right to discriminate and favor the internet traffic of those companies with whom they have pay-for-play arrangements and the right to consign all others to a slow and bumpy road".

To put it simply, internet service providers could start charging companies to ensure their content loads at a decent speed, which is very important if a company is to be successful online.

Without net neutrality, internet providers may pursue similar offers more aggressively. FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said in a video statement that while some regulations have been rolled back, the "transparency rule" has been expanded.

Supporters of net neutrality are concerned that without it, we could lose access to a free and open internet.

Critics of net neutrality, including the Trump administration, say such rules impeded companies' ability to adapt to a quickly evolving internet. Although the vote occurred months ago, it took time for the results to take effect. In reality, the FTC will only be able to enforce a company's own terms and conditions, which won't do anything to stop the spread of paid fast lanes, zero-rating, or anti-competitive behavior across the industry.

Ajit Pai, in an op-ed piece published today, championed the end of Net Neutrality regulations.

"The public is outraged and fighting tooth and nail to get Congress to overrule the FCC - and it's likely that that will happen before ISPs can do too much damage", Greer said. The repeal will also let ISPs charge websites or online services for priority access to consumers. But here are a few tactics that have been tried before that have drawn scrutiny under the old net neutrality rules.

The repeal of net neutrality rules took effect Monday. Last week, Senate Democrats urged House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin, to bring the issue to a vote on the House floor.

Other states, including New York, Vermont, and Montana, are using executive orders and various other means of reinstating net neutrality, but at the moment, Washington is the only state to pass a bill protecting it. OR passed similiar legislation, but it won't go into effect until next year, as Motherboard reports. And California bill moving through the state legislature would go one step beyond that would go one step beyond that by banning all zero-rating programs altogether. There's also a resolution by Democrats in Congress - with some Republican support - to undo the FCC's decision and re-implement the Obama-era rules that has passed the Senate but faces long odds in the House of Representatives.
