World number one Simona Halep, the runner-up in 2014 and 2017, routed Belgian 16th seed Elise Mertens 6-2, 6-1 to reach the French Open quarterfinals for the third time.

The victor of the match will play either third seed Marin Cilic or Schwartzman's compatriot Juan Martin del Potro.

The 31-year-old has only lost two matches in his career at the tournament and he used his relentless aggression from the baseline to wear down the determination of Schwartzman to secure a further two breaks to move within a game of the last four.

Their last-eight match was level at 6-6 (5/5) in a first-set tie-break on Court Suzanne Lenglen after Del Potro had earlier missed five break points.

A fearless Schwartzman took inspiration from David and Goliath as he fought back from two sets down to beat Kevin Anderson in the fourth round and slayed Nadal - who struggled on serve and returned poorly - in the first set.

They will return on Thursday morning.

That proved costly as Nadal broke and then repeated the trick to move into a 5-3, 30-15 lead.

The top seed had few problems in serving out the set and he made a flying start to the second with another break to love as Marterer got a first-hand look at why the champion has been dubbed the King of Clay. It will be followed by the all-American matchup between Madison Keys and Sloane Stephens.

The Spanish third seed, who was the champion in Paris in 2016, swept aside the Russian 6-2, 6-1 in just an hour and 10 minutes.

Sharapova, playing at Roland Garros for the first time since 2015, suffered her most one-sided defeat at the Slams since a 6-3, 6-0 loss to Victoria Azarenka in the 2012 Australian Open final.

From the moment Nadal took the second set, it looked unlikely Schwartzman would earn a first win in six attempts against the man at whose academy he had previously trained.
