India to join Clean Sea Campaign: PM Narendra Modi

India Has Set Example By Committing To Beat Plastic Pollution UN World Environment Day: 'Our world is swamped by plastic'

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on the world Tuesday to do more to tackle plastic pollution and other environmental issues.

According to official statistics, around 180,000 tones of plastic materials spread in Sudan, constituting one of the biggest environmental pollution in the country.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Jitendra Singh said that celebration of World Environment Day was an opportunity to rededicate ourselves to the cause of protection of environment.

Pandya went on to say: "It is unfortunate that the state's environment minister himself is trying to protect plastic manufacturing units, which produce banned category of plastic". This pollution has a severe effect on marine life; it is unfortunate that due to our irresponsible attitude, we are polluting the very food source which we and our future generations depend on, he said.

The theme for World Environment Day is "Beat Plastic Pollution".

Modi also took to Twitter to greet the people.

World Environment Day is observed internationally on June 5 every year under the auspices of United National Environment Programme (UNEP).

This year, India is the global host of the Wednesday in collaboration with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) with "Beat Plastic Pollution" as its theme.

When Parmar was asked if the Gujarat government planned to ban plastic, he said: "The issue needs careful consideration and we can not announce a plastic ban abruptly".

"These mainly find their ways into the water bodies disintegrating to micro-plastic which are consumed by aquatic animals and ultimately kills them or are transferred into the food chain".

More than 64,000 tonnes of plastic packaging is disposed of in household general waste bins and sent to landfill in Scotland each year, costing around £11 million. As part of 2018 World Environment Day, the Senior Management and staff of the Bank signed a "Pledge Board" to reduce plastic waste and ensure a better and healthier workplace environment.

"The developing world complains how it has exploited environment and thus ask for technology and finance, I feel this is important but environment won't be defended unless the society is motivated", he added. While the "plastic menace" is the focus of recent efforts, India is also focused on other areas of environmental interest, including mainstreaming energy efficiency. The simplest plastic normally used in grocery store bags takes at least 100 years to break down while the complex ones take up to 600 years or beyond to decompose.
