A day after the United States slapped punitive tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, U.S. President Donald Trump took aim at Canada's agricultural trade policies.

Underscoring his frustration, Trudeau offered a rare glimpse into high-level talks with Trump's administration to update the North American Free Trade Agreement, which the president regularly threatens to tears up.

"Let me be clear: These tariffs are totally unacceptable", a visibly frustrated Trudeau told reporters in Ottawa, calling the measures inconceivable and deplorable.

The attacks came as the government is already reeling from Trump's imposition last week of steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada, part the president's broader tariff attack on Mexico and Europe. Lampron criticized previous trade deals that opened the Canadian market. "Do Timber & Lumber in US?" Canada's planned retaliatory measures will take effect July 1 and stay in place until the US backs down.

Pierre Lampron, president of the Dairy Farmers of Canada, said in a letter to Trudeau Monday the prime minister's comments were "quite worrisome", and "deeply troubling for our dairy farmers", given repeated pledges of support by Trudeau and his lawmakers for the sector. But President Donald Trump has dusted them off in recent months and restored tariffs to a prominent place in his America First approach to the rest of the world.

Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., said he met with senators Monday as they consider a legislative response, drawing interest from "both sides of the aisle" who are concerned about the tariffs.

Both Abreu and Bergamaschi say global climate change organizations also want the G7 to set the stage for countries around the world to agree to raise emissions targets they say remain far too low. "But we're also putting a number of tariffs on consumer goods, finished products for which Canadians have easy alternatives". The Bank of Canada will publish its latest financial system review Thursday, which is sure to be closely watched by economists after last week's mixed economic messages. The move triggered protests from the countries, American businesses, and initiated a possible trade war with the USA allies. "If we charge a country ZERO to sell their goods, and they charge us 25, 50 or even 100 per cent to sell ours, it is UNFAIR and can no longer be tolerated".

The Liberal government is also expected to face many protests over Trans Mountain, following the outrage that has greeted its pipeline plan so far. Before the establishment of the federal income tax in 1913, tariffs were a big money raiser for the USA government. "Not acceptable!" Trump wrote in a Twitter post.

Trudeau and the European Union condemned the steel and aluminum tariffs, and tempers will no doubt be high on June 8 when leaders hold a traditional discussion about trade.

Mexico said it would slap high import taxes on USA goods such as pork bellies, apples, cranberries, grapes, cheese, and steel.

Hillman, a former member of the World Trade Organization's Appellate Body, told Weekend Edition that responding to the likely defense from the US will be tricky for the WTO. The official said a range of issues remain to be resolved but the US looks forward to continuing the negotiations with Canada.

More broadly, economists say trade restrictions make the economy less efficient.
