Qualcomm has revealed its latest chipset, the Snapdragon 850, aiming to bring all-day battery life and always-on connectivity to a new range of Windows 10 notebooks and 2-in-1s. The new platform, according to Qualcomm, along with improved performance, should provide +20% battery life, and +20% wireless speeds. The platform is dedicated to virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) applications - and everything in between - in what Qualcomm calls Extended Reality (XR).

Qualcomm announced a new top tier Snapdragon chipset this week, the Snapdragon 850. You've got the same Kryo 385 CPU cores, 84-bit architecture, same RAM support, 10nm (2nd gen) process, same Adreno 630 GPU, same video codec and capture support, etc. Qualcomm did up the CPU speed to 2.96GHz, though. The X20 LTE modem pushes the downlink speeds up to 1.2 Gbps.

Qualcomm is focused on expanding its chipset business and along with making chips for mobile phones, the company is also making chips for the Internet of Things devices, VR headset, among others.

The chip is essentially a Snapdragon 845, the chip found in high-end Android devices like the Samsung Galaxy S9, but beefed up slightly so it is suitable for use in PCs. The chip is the result of a join effort between Qualcomm and Samsung.

Both Aqstic and aptX are supported on the Snapdragon 850, offering smartphone-class audio processing for microphones and headphones, something is actually a step UP from traditional notebook offerings.

Microsoft has also come into play beyond the tech giant's operating system. A lot of the the AI experiences will be hardware accelerated as well. Qualcomm only showed their big and clunky reference tablet running simple Windows app store games like Asphalt 8.

Qualcomm on Tuesday at Computex 2018 unveiled the Snapdragon 850 Mobile Compute Platform. It doesn't completely rewrite the current situation, and I expect we will still find the improved performance to be lacking when compared to Intel, especially when software emulation is utilized.
