IOS 12: New Memoji, 32 User Group FaceTime, Organized Notifications and More

At WWDC 2018, Apple lays out its vision for the future of the iPhone Apple Introduces New Controls for Limiting Time Spent on Devices

Apple in recent months has faced a barrage of criticism over the way it allegedly fails to manage the amount of exposure time its users are getting with their devices like iPhone and iPad.

Apple's WWDC 2018 developers conference kicks off today with the USA technology firm expected to unveil a swathe of important software updates.

Apple's new Screentime app will allow users to see detailed reports about how often they use their iPhone and which apps they use most frequently.

Carolina Milanesi, an analyst at Creative Strategies, said the flexibility of Apple's system set it apart from others designed only for parental monitoring, offering the ability for teens and adults to impose their own limits.

One of the rumors leading up to WWDC 2018 is that instead of introducing visual overhauls and changes and a ton of brand new features to the iOS platform, Apple would instead choose to focus on improving the overall quality of iOS. A new Do Not Disturb during Bedtime mode to help people get a better night's sleep by dimming the display and hiding all notifications on the lock screen until prompted in the morning. They were there to hear about new features and products.

Apple is also implementing a new feature called stacks on the desktop.

iOS 11 required users swipe up from the bottom, and then long press on the app they want to close. Memoji will let you create an Animoji of yourself, giving you options for skin color, hair style, freckles, glasses, and more. Apple is adding new animals (and a ghost) to the Animoji feature, which is only available to iPhone X users. Texting is more fun in iOS 12, too.

So what's new? The Verge breaks down iOS 12 into a number of categories, which we'll list off briefly below. Even better, Safari will warn users when they reuse the same password at multiple sites.

Apple is also adding some developer tools to help make it easier to bring iOS apps to the Mac.

Apple rolled out new support for augmented reality applications as it unveiled a new format for digital objects that appear to live in the real world. If you're in an unwieldly group chat, you can start a FaceTime directly from Messages so you can argue with family members over video. Among the upgrades include WebKit, so you can look at web pages on the watch, a Walkie-Talkie function that's fairly self-explanatory, automatic sensing of workouts, and a pilot test at several universities of an "identity card" feature that will allow access to certain buildings.

The developer preview of iOS 12 is available to Apple Developer Program members today.

Tigers, koalas, and T-rexes, oh my!

Apple's next macOS will be named Mojave, after the desert in California.

Comment fields and like and share buttons are now turned off by default in Safari. A new QR reader in the control center and much more. If user permission is given, medical data can be shared with third-party apps for health-related purposes (for example, reminding you if you've missed your meds).
