Microsoft reportedly agrees to acquire coding site GitHub

| 04 June, 2018, 11:22

It looks like GitHub will be added to the list, giving Microsoft an edge in open-source development.

Last valued at $2 billion (in 2015), GitHub is responsible for hosting the single largest collection of code in one place, acting as the repository for projects ranging in scope from small developer teams to the likes of Google.

So what does it mean for the world's biggest crowd-sourced code repository to be bought by the world's biggest software company? The purchase makes sense - not only is the majority of Microsoft's developer documentation now hosted on GitHub, but so is numerous company's recent open-source projects like Visual Studio Code and PowerShell.

Business Insider was the first to report that the companies were holding talks last week. In any case, we will be sure to keep you abreast of updates as the story develops.

The company has been looking for a CEO since previous year, when co-founder Chris Wanstrath announced plans to step down from the role. GitHub has also been undergoing executive changes.

Despite all those users, Github was not making money, and it probably wasn't long for the world as a independent company. Many engineers use the site to store their code, keep tabs on updates, and even use it as a discussion forum. If Microsoft does acquire GitHub, it could be seen as a visible attempt to further integrate Linux and Windows and increase interoperability, as demonstrated by the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) compatibility layer found in Windows 10. Terms of the agreement weren't known on Sunday.

So by that measure, this deal will be the real test of Microsoft's newfound love for open-source software and multiplatform development. GitHub has also not responded to media inquiries to the potential acquisition.
