People flee El Rodeo village, Escuintla department, 35 km south of Guatemala City, after the eruption of the Fuego Volcano on June 3, 2018.

"Sergio Cabanas, the general secretary of Guatemala's Conred disaster agency".

It urged residents living near the volcano to evacuate immediately and warned residents of the towns of Chimaltenango, Sacatepequez and Escuintla to watch out for volcanic rocks and ash.

A man in Antigua, Guatemala, cleaned ashes off his vehicle Sunday.

Mr Cabañas later said the dead included a member of his agency's staff.

Officials have advised citizens to wear masks due to falling ash, which has been raining down in four of Guatemala's administrative regions.

At least 20 people were injured, and authorities have said they feared the death toll could rise with an undetermined number of people unaccounted for.

Sacatepezuez television showed images of the volcano's damage including the charred landscape and three bodies laid partially buried in ash-colored debris from the volcano.

"We think that there could be a state of devastation in at least three areas", said President Jimmy Morales.

The volcanic eruption on Sunday spewed a river of red, hot lava and belched thick clouds of smoke almost 10,000 metres above sea level, CNN quoted the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) as saying.

A river of lava spilled into El Rodeo village, destroying houses and burning people inside, according to the National Disaster Management Agency (Conred).

Speaking from ash-covered Antigua, around 11 miles from the erupting volcano, Richard, 24, said he trekked to the base camp of Acatenango, which lies two miles from the deadly Volcan de Fuego, a day earlier.

Workers and guests were evacuated from La Reunion golf club near Antigua as a black cloud of ash rose from just beyond the club's limits.

Police officers help the rescue effort in El Rodeo village.

"It is important to remain calm because the Fuego volcano erupts throughout the year", said David de Leon, spokesman for the National Disaster Prevention Authority.

The huge plumes of smoke that could be seen from various parts of the country and the ash that fell in four of Guatemala's departments caused alarm among residents.
