Computer tampering charge dropped against Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens

Embattled Missouri Governor Eric Greitensannounced on Tuesday he will resign over the scandals that have dominated his tenure.
The 44-year-old governor made the announcement almost 17 months after taking the oath of the office with a pledge to root out "corrupt career politicians". They soon expanded to include questions about whether he had violated campaign-finance laws.
"The last few months have been incredibly hard for me, for my family, for my team, for my friends and for many, many people".
Greitens is the first Missouri governor to resign since 1857. Claire McCaskill, have turned decisively against him.
His partner in that affair accused the governor of taking and threatening to expose compromising photos of their sexual escapades if she disclosed their relationship, leading to a felony invasion of privacy charge in February.
St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner said she believes there is still sufficient evidence to bring a case against Greitens, who was accused of using a veterans' charity donor list to raise money for his 2016 campaign without the permission of the group.
The Missouri Legislature began a special session earlier this month to consider impeachment and a House panel issued a subpoena last week ordering the governor to testify next Monday.
Though Greitens had apparently made a decision to resign days earlier, he began the week as though he would continue his fight. The woman's name never has been officially released; it is redacted from the legislative documents and she is identified only by her initials in court filings. State Attorney General Josh Hawley, the frontrunner for the GOP senate nomination, has called for Greitens to resign. But the report's release created a firestorm, with both Republicans and Democrats calling for his resignation.
Under state law, Lt. Gov. Mike Parson, also a Republican, will take over as governor and serve out the remainder of the term. The report aired shortly after Greitens delivered his State of the State address.
"While I cannot force Mr. Greitens to take personal accountability for his actions, there are things I can do", she said.
Walling said several factors would make a political revival tougher for Greitens than for other scandal-plagued politicians.
"There has been no witch hunt", Gardner said. The computer tampering case was one of two criminal matters he faced while in office.
A separate investigation is looking into whether Greitens used a charity's email list to solicit campaign donations and failed to report his access to the list as a campaign contribution. A special prosecutor assigned to the case said on Tuesday that her investigation will continue, according to local media. She said he did not want to be seen in public with her because he was running for office.
"I am thankful to all those who have worked beside me, who sweated beside me, those who gave their time, their energy and their precious resources, so that we could pursue our mission of taking Missouri in a new and better direction. They are going to be everywhere, and then everyone will know what a little whore you are".
