His wife, according to the version that was reported Tuesday, had found his body after he had been shot several times by the entrance to their apartment in Kiev. He in turn had hired a gunman. "I'm sorry for making you live through this", he said. Olechka, I'm sorry, but there were no options here either.

Russia's foreign ministry has soundly denied any involvement in a plan to kill Babchenko, saying the entire spectacle is merely "fanning anti-Russian hysteria". "Separately, I want to apologize to my wife for the Hell that she has been through".

Babchenko said he was not allowed to go into the details of his false death.

Simon Otrovsky, a journalist who worked alongside Babchenko, tweeted on Wednesday: "While I am very happy Arkady is alive I am also angry and confused because my fellow reporters and I spent yesterday posting and reading memories we shared of him and feeling very down and out".

Having been called unpatriotic over a piece previous year on Russia's intervention in Syria, Babchenko complained of an atmosphere of hate toward his work.

Less than 24 hours earlier, Ukraine said the reporter had died from three gunshots to the back in the stairwell of his apartment building in a contract-style killing in a case that provoked an outpouring of grief and a diplomatic spat.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko blamed Moscow for wanting to kill Babchenko, and congratulated his country's security services for becoming stronger in the face of "Russian aggression".

Police claimed the would-be assassin has now been seized as a result of the operation, having been ordered to execute experienced war reporter Babchenko for $70,000.

"I'm still alive", he said.

"Law enforcers could not fail to understand that the news of the murder of Arkady Babchenko would be a pain in thousands of hearts around the world".

The reports triggered a statement from the Russian foreign ministry, which said journalists were being killed with impunity in Ukraine.

"We think this should attract very tough worldwide reaction which will move the Ukrainian authorities towards active measures to resolve the situation", said Mr Peskov.

Its not clear whether Russian Federation was involved in the plot to trick Babchenko's enemies.

No stranger to death, Babchenko served in the Russian army during Chechnya's two wars for independence, after which he wrote a powerful memoir about the everyday brutality of conflict before turning to journalism, writing about war for a range of Russian publications.

"I am convinced that the Russian totalitarian machine could not forgive his honesty and principled position", Ukraine's Prime Minister Volodymyr Hroysman posted on Facebook Tuesday.

Russian Federation is ranked 148 out of 180 counties on the World Press Freedom Index 2018, compiled by press freedom campaign group Reporters Without Borders.

A number of Kremlin critics have been killed in Ukraine in recent years, with one gunned down on a Kiev street in broad daylight and another whose auto exploded. Ukraine is planed 101.
