Arkady Babchenko appeared at the news conference called by the head of the Ukrainian Security Service to thank everyone who was mourning his death, the Associated Press reported.

Babchenko, a prominent war correspondent, is extremely critical of Russia's annexation of Crimea, and was forced to flee Russian Federation in February 2017 because of threats to him and his family.

The head of Russia's Human Rights Council said the council condemns the murder and will demand that Kiev conduct a thorough investigation.

Mr Babchenko was reportedly found by his wife bleeding at the entrance to his block of flats, shot several times in the back, and died in an ambulance.

Babchenko is one of at least a dozen Kremlin critics who've been murdered or died under mysterious circumstances over the past decade.

The murder of anti-Kremlin reporter Arkady Babchenko was widely reported and condemned on Tuesday. He said that the attacker shot Babchenko in the back as he stepped out of his apartment to buy bread.

He had been denounced by pro-government politicians in Russia over comments on social media about the Russian bombing of Syria, and over his characterization of Russia as an aggressor toward Ukraine.

Mr Babchenko served in the Russian army and fought during the first separatist war in Chechnya during the 1990s.

Russian citizen Arkady Babchenko, a journalist and TV host, was shot dead in Kiev Friday. The final straw, he wrote in a Facebook post later reprinted by the Guardian, came just a few months before he fled, following his December 2016 post after the crash of a Russian military plane in the Black Sea.

The journalist left Russian Federation in February 2017 after he claimed he had been receiving threats and shared concerns he might be jailed. "Now, for the most part, the people that Russians hate-it's all of you".
