Over the weekend, a group of photographs posted by the Arizona Republic quickly went viral until it was pointed out that the pictures had been taken in 2014, while President Barack Obama was still in office. Liberal activists and others, including some from media outlets, tried to highlight the issue by tweeting photos of young people in steel cages that actually were taken during the Obama administration.

McCain said those blunders were bad because they gave political capital to their opponents, but co-host Joy Behar said the post was insensitive to immigrant families separated by controversial us policies.

"We need to change the law so families arriving illegally can be sent home swiftly, and so there can be an actual border protecting the country, and protecting American communities", he said.

The immigration debate has reached a fever pitch in recent months following reports that since October about 700 children crossing the US-Mexico border have been separated from their parents.

"The current immigration and border crisis and all of the attendant concerns it raises are the exclusive product of loopholes in federal immigration law that Democrats refuse to close", Miller said, citing a law to combat human trafficking, asylum law and court settlements that have protected children from detention. "This is a new decision, a policy decision put in place by the attorney general", which Muñoz said "puts us in league with the most brutal regimes in the world's history".

The parent would be referred to prosecution for illegal entry, while the child would be placed with a sponsor as the child's case makes its way through immigration court. "So, if we do our duty and prosecute those cases, then children inevitably for a period of time might be in different conditions". One particularly disturbing image showed two children sleeping on mattresses on the floor inside what appeared to be a cage. The caption references U.S. efforts to process 47,000 unaccompanied children at the Nogales center and another one in Brownsville, Texas.

Jon Favreau, a former Obama speechwriter, also retweeted the photo May 27 with the caption, "Look at these pictures".

In a now-deleted tweet, Favreau wrote: "This is happening right now, and the only debate that matters is how we force our government to get these kids back to their families as fast as humanly possible". It was subsequently reported that almost 1,500 immigrant children had been "lost" while in federal custody until the end of past year.

The individual or organization caring for the child is called a sponsor.

He later issued a corrected tweet: "These bad pictures are from 2014 when the government's challenge was reconnecting unaccompanied minors".

The problem with Romney's idea is that it assumed the government could accomplish this goal by standing in the way of undocumented immigrants finding jobs, when the reality is that majority make money doing low-pay, low-skill work (farm labor, child care for individual families, housekeeping) that is notoriously hard to monitor for compliance with laws precluding the hiring of such workers.

Trump, in turn, has recently blamed the policy of splitting up families on a law enacted by Democrats, claiming that his opponents in Congress are blocking attempts to fix the immigration system to get rid of the "horrible law".

Here's the issue: Neither case requires parents to be separated from their children.

The Trump administration will soon begin fingerprinting parents claiming custody of children who entered the United States illegally without an adult relative, officials said on Tuesday, prompting criticism that children may be abandoned by those who fear being identified and deported.
