"We know that one day of training will not stop bias or solve racism", a company spokesperson told MONEY in an email.

More trainings will follow, although it's unclear if stores will close for those sessions again.

A good exercise she suggested was to practice counter-stereotyping, where you look for something unique about a person that is beyond their social identity. "It's not just a black people thing".

Many retailers including Walmart and Target said they already offer some racial bias training.

Calvin Lai, an assistant professor of psychological and brain sciences at Washington University, also says anti-bias training can sometimes backfire. Nordstrom has said it plans to enhance its training after issuing an apology to three black teenagers in Missouri who employees falsely accused of shoplifting.

Starbucks' video about the training closes with the message, "It won't be flawless, but we're all in this together".

Each store will receive a tool kit which will allow for partners to learn together in small self-guided groups.

The training is meant to help Starbucks navigate the challenges of being the "third place" that its leaders have often spoken about - the place where people spend time outside of work and their home.

"It could be having a question that elicits something more interesting than, say, the weather or the traffic", she said. In the incident, a Starbucks manager called the police after the two men declined to make a purchase, explaining that they were waiting for a business associate.

The incident was recorded and quickly went viral. There were nationwide protests and boycotts, and the city of Philadelphia also ended up settling with the men-the two got a symbolic $1 each, plus a promise of a $200,000 education program for young entrepreneurs.

Their crime? They had asked to use the restroom without buying anything first. Starbucks added that if employees see customers who are unreasonably loud, watching something inappropriate on a personal device or disrupting others with their personal hygiene, they should step in. If customers are disruptive, employees have been advised to step in.

Target introduced unconscious bias training in 2017, has trained employees at its Minneapolis headquarters and continues to roll it out across the company, the statement said.
