Philip Roth Quotes: Trump A 'Boastful Baffoon' And Other Memorable Writings

Philip Roth: A literary life in seven stages Novelist Philip Roth has died

Roth identified himself as an American writer, not a Jewish one.

Literary giant Philip Roth's critical comments about President Donald Trump are being remembered following the author's death at the age of 85 on Tuesday.

Eight of Roth's novels were adapted into films, including "Goodbye, Columbus", "Portnoy's Complaint", "The Human Stain", "The Dying Animal", "Elegy", "The Humbling", "Indignation" and "American Pastoral".

Roth's literary agent Andrew Wylie confirmed that Roth passed away in hospital in NY on Tuesday night from congestive heart failure. But he received virtually every other literary honor, including two National Book Awards, two National Book Critics Circle prizes and, in 1998, the Pulitzer for "American Pastoral".

He collected the Man Booker International Prize for lifetime achievement in fiction in 2011, followed the next year by Spain's Prince of Asturias award for literature and in 2015, France presented Roth with the insignia of Commander of the Legion of Honour, a laurel the author called "a wonderful surprise".

Roth was regarded as a fierce satirist and uncompromising realist, confronting readers in a bold, direct style that scorned false sentiment or hopes for heavenly reward.

Roth, however, did not feel comfortable with his reiterated categorization as a Jewish-American writer. I would say just stop now. In 2005 Roth became only the third living writer to have his books enshrined in the Library of Congress. Long after lesser novelists embraced semi-retirement, Roth published three magisterial novels that came to be known as the American Trilogy. The son of an insurance salesman, Roth earned a bachelor's degree at Buckle University and a master's degree in English from the University of Chicago.

Former president Barack Obama also awarded Roth with the National Humanities Medal in 2010. Nine of his novels featured his fictional alter-ego, Nathan Zuckerman (The Ghost Writer, Zuckerman Unbound, Exit Ghost), exploring nearly every facet of his identity, from being Jewish to being a writer and a man.

Roth's personal life was dragged into the spotlight following his messy breakup with British actress Claire Bloom, who painted a grim picture of life with her ex-husband in her 1996 memoir "Leaving a Doll's House".

"I don't want to read any more of it, and I don't even want to talk about it anymore". His book "When She Was Good" is said to be based in part of his life with Williams, who he said tricked into marriage by pretending she was pregnant.

The topics Roth wrote about included the Jewish experience in America, promiscuous male sexuality, and the hypocrisy and disillusionment of American political life since the 1940s.

He first Wednesday Margaret Martinson Williams in 1959 but the couple divorced four years later. She ultimately died five years later in a auto crash.
