Movie mogul Harvey Weinstein appeared in handcuffs in a NY court on Friday to face charges of rape and other sex crimes against two of the scores of women who have accused him of misconduct, ending his reign as a Hollywood kingpin.

His face pulled in a strained smile and his hands locked behind his back, the once powerful Hollywood figure emerged from a NY police station Friday charged with first- and third-degree rape, and with a criminal sex act, a searing reckoning for the man who became a symbol of a worldwide outcry over sexual misconduct.

Harvey Weinstein is expected to surrender Friday morning to authorities in NY on sex assault charges.

Judge Kevin McGrath ordered Weinstein released on $1 million cash bail.

Former Hollywood film mogul Harvey Weinstein has been released on $1m (£751,000) bail after being charged in NY with rape and sexual abuse.

The charges followed a months-long investigation that involved the Manhattan district attorney's office.

"Today Harvey Weinstein will take his first step on his inevitable descent to hell", wrote accuser Asia Argento.

"I don't feel good", the fallen movie mogul said from his holding cell, according to sources.

Some of Hollywood's biggest names have admitted they knew about Weinstein's misconduct.

"Mr. Weinstein's criminal attorneys Blair Berk and Benjamin Brafman have said that a fair investigation of the allegations of criminal wrongdoing will prove they are without merit", a spokesperson for Weinstein told the Los Angeles Times of the Los Angeles investigation. "Bad behavior is not on trial in this case - it is only if you intentionally committed a criminal act, and Mr. Weinstein vigorously denies that".

Gershman said he thought Brafman's best strategy would be to stall for time and try to get the best possible plea deal, which would certainly include prison time. Lucia Evans told the New Yorker in October that she was a college student when Weinstein approached her at a club in NY in 2004.

"I said, over and over, 'I don't want to do this, stop, don't, '" she told the magazine.

That Weinstein is the first is certainly gratifying, and all the women who have spoken up certainly deserve our thanks today. Weinstein shook his head and softly said, "No".

He's accused of forcing then-aspiring actress Lucia Evans to perform oral sex in 2004 and twice raping "Boardwalk Empire" actress Paz de la Huerta in 2010.

Palmer said on Twitter that all digital proceeds from the song until June 30 will go to the Time's Up legal defense fund for survivors of sexual assault and harassment.

You can head over to Variety for their full report on Harvey Weinstein turning himself in to NY police, and take a look at a number of tweets from those responding to the arrest, including Rose McGowan's interview on Good Morning America.

"You sorry, Harvey?" - Shout from a throng of media as Weinstein walked into courthouse in handcuffs.

The accusations gave rise to the #MeToo movement in which hundreds of women have publicly accused powerful men of misconduct.

She also says her "brave and lovely client has sacrificed her privacy and peace to come forward" and asks that she be left alone. Detectives took Mr. Weinstein to the First Police Precinct for questioning, but as soon as the groping allegation came up, he halted the interview and asked for a lawyer, the police said.

Without physical evidence, or at least robust corroborating evidence, an accusation from a woman - even from two women - has typically been insufficient to even bring a sexual assault or rape case, let alone convict.
