Trump's son-in-law granted permanent security clearance, AP source says

In his statement, Mr Lowell added that Mr Trump's son-in-law had also sat for a second time with special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating the United States leader's campaign links with Russian Federation over alleged election meddling.

Whether the restoration of Kushner's clearance is somehow related to his cooperation with Mueller is not immediately clear. The first interview, which happened in late 2017, largely dealt with Trump's former national security adviser, Michael Flynn., according to the source.

The 37-year-old aide and envoy - who is married to Ivanka Trump - lost his top-level security clearance amid a broader White House shakeup in February, restricting his access to America's most closely guarded secrets. His initial security clearance application didn't list dozens of foreign contacts that he later included in updated submissions to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Zaid, a veteran Washington lawyer who handles security clearances, said it was highly unlikely that the special counsel would uncover evidence of improper foreign entanglements and not flag it for security officials.

"In each occasion, he answered all questions asked and did whatever he could to expedite the conclusion of all the (investigations)", Lowell said.

The granting of the security clearance suggests that investigators' scrutiny of Kushner has decreased significantly.

"Having completed all of these processes, he's looking forward to continuing to do the work the president has asked him to do".

The news of the Mueller interview comes as ABC News has learned Kushner has been granted a permanent security clearance on Wednesday after a lengthy review by the White House and Federal Bureau of Investigation, according to a source familiar with the matter. Kushner previously sat for an interview last November, which was largely focused on former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who soon after pleaded guilty to charges of making false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Even without a permanent clearance, the president's son-in-law had been allowed to see materials, including the President's Daily Brief, that are among the most sensitive in government.

The resolution of his clearances does not guarantee that Mr. Kushner faces no legal jeopardy.

Initially, Kushner did not list his foreign contacts on the form, though he submitted an addendum indicating he was willing to detail them.

Giuliani also urged the swift wrapping of the probe in the backdrop of former FBI Director James Comey revelation in the last days of the 2016 presidential race that he was reopening the investigation into Hillary Clinton's email server, according to several media reports.
