Some Newly-elected JD(S), Congress MLAs reach Hyderabad

Prime Minister Modi terms Karnataka victory as extraordinary, thanks the citizens of the state BJP asked to form government in Karnataka despite lack of majority

Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Yeddyurappa, suggested the floor test to be conducted on Monday, but the apex court rejected the suggestion while adding that the floor test should happen at the earliest. The Congress-JDS lawyer also sought proper security for their MLAs in case of floor test being conducted.

One opinion is that the petition has in effect been rendered infructuous despite the next date of hearing given on Friday at 10.30 a.m.

Karnataka governor Vajubhai Vala administers oath to BJP leader B. S. Yeddyurappa as chief minister of the state at a ceremony in Bengaluru on Thursday.

The Congress has argued the letter submitted by Yeddyurappa has only 104 signatures, which is clearly short of the majority mark of 112-seats in the 222-member assembly.

Yeddyurappa is trying everything to poach the MLAs of Congress and JDS to prove his majority in the Floor Test.

Reacting to the development, the Congress said that it was extraordinary and demanded the Supreme Court to take note of this 'confession.' Pawan Khera told NDTV that Rohatgi's statement was a confession of horse-trading and the top court ought to have taken note of his confession.

The bench, comprising justices AK Sikri, SA Bobde and Ashok Bhushan, posted the matter for further hearing on Friday morning and ordered placing before it the letter of support from MLAs presented by the BJP to Karnataka Governor.

In a dramatic turn of events, the SC heard the Congress-JD (S) petition against Governor Vajubhai Vala's invite to Yeddyurappa for almost three and a half hours on Thursday starting at 1.45 am.

Karnataka CM race LIVE updates: BS Yeddyurappa becomes Karnataka's new Chief Minister

The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to stay BJP leader B S Yeddyurappa's swearing-in as Karnataka chief minister after a rare post-midnight courtroom hearing on Congress-JD (S) combine's bid to stall the government formation.

Fearing defection to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress and JD-S yesterday made a decision to shift their MLAs, lodged at Eagleton Resort in Bengaluru.

The Congress and the JD (S) had joined hands after the election and staked claim to form the government.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was on Wednesday asked to form a government in Karnataka, sparking criticism from the opposition who said Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party did not win enough seats to take power.

Within hours of taking oath on May 17, Yeddyurappa said, "I had promised the farmers that I would waive off crop loans up to Rs 1 lakh soon after I become the Chief Minister".

Targeting the BJP, he said, "A murder accused is the president of a national party, which has not been seen in the last 70 years".

The Supreme Court's judgments in S.R. Bommai vs Union of India (1994) and Rameshwar Prasad vs Union of India (2006) have dealt with such situations.
