The barometer Sensex of the BSE, which had opened at 35,452.35 points, closed at 35,387.88 points - lower by 156.06 points or 0.44 per cent - from the previous day's close at 35,543.94 points.

The 50-share NSE Nifty closed at 10,741.10, down 60.75 points or 0.56 per cent, its lowest closing level since 10 May 2018, as 37 of its constituents dropped.


The 30-share Sensex fell by 125.10 points (-0.35 percent) to 35024.02 in early trade.

So far, the major gainers on the BSE were Coal India, Tata Motors, Wipro, Tata Motors (DVR) and Hindustan Unilever, while Tata Steel, HDFC, Dr Reddy's Lab, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Industries were the major losers.

Sectoral indices led by IT, Teck, capital goods, oil and gas, banking and PSU were trading in the red.

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) net sold shares worth ₹699.22 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought equities to the tune of ₹ 229.06 crore on May 16, as per provisional data.

In the Asian region, Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.48%, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng slipped 0.54%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, however, ended 0.22 per cent lower in yesterday's trade.
