Arsenal have reportedly made contact with Patrick Vieira over the possibility of their former captain succeeding Arsene Wenger as boss.

The Spaniard and his representatives, on Tuesday, held advanced negotiations with Arsenal's hierarchy and are at a stage where backroom staff and financial packages are being discussed.

With the Emirates Stadium debts to pay and the rise of Chelsea and Manchester City in the years immediately after the "Invincibles", Wenger kept Arsenal on a relatively even keel.

Without a Premier League title since the 2003/04 season and without any European success, many believed Wenger was taking the club backwards and was being selfish by staying on as manager rather than listening to the fans' demands.

With the club having now interviewed all of the main candidates, Arteta has emerged as the firm favourite to succeed Wenger in the past few days.

"With Vieira - and this is only my opinion - yes".

Meanwhile, Pires and Vieira were teammates for six years at Arsenal.

Football stats website WhoScored monitored every Premier League game in 2017/18 and rated players out of 10 based on their wide array of statistics.

As for Wenger's long-time assistant, Steve Bould, he's been offered a new role within the club - subject to approval from the new manager - but he's also mulling over "a potential position at Stoke City". Arteta also has received tutelage from a man that many consider the best in the business today by assisting under Guardiola.

The 68-year-old saw out his Arsenal career against Huddersfield with a 1-0 win, ending his reign after 1,235 games and being celebrated as Arsenal's greatest ever manager.

"It will be very hard for me [without Arsenal]", Wenger told Arsenal's website. That is the problem I face at the moment.
