Swiss Tesla accident: crash may have sparked battery fire

Swiss Tesla accident: crash may have sparked battery fire Tesla Bull Turns Bearish As Clouds Over Elon Musk Continue To Darken

Among accidents to make headlines was a fiery March 23 crash in California that involved its "Autopilot" feature.

On Twitter, co-founder Elon Musk said it was "super messed up" that the incident was garnering public attention, while thousands of accidents involving traditional automobiles "get nearly no coverage".

The spokesperson also said that Tesla is expected to "provide criticism and feedback to ensure that we're creating the best, safest cars on the road".

Tesla is at a critical juncture as it tries to fix an inauspicious launch of the Model 3 sedan, a mid-market vehicle crucial to its success and future profitability that has been plagued by early production problems.

Reuters recalls that Elon Musk mentioned reorganization during Tesla's Q1 earnings conference call, but at that time, Musk did not go into details. The woman also told police that she was looking at his phone before the collision and estimated the speed of the auto at about 60 miles per hour (97 km/h), which is consistent with the testimonies of eyewitnesses.

Winkler also said that Tesla staff had been highly cooperative in the post-accident investigation.

Despite this, CEO Elon Musk hit out at coverage in the immediate aftermath of the crash, asserting that a crash of this sort would usually result in "severe injury or death".

Tesla said it was working to gather all the facts about the Swiss case and was fully cooperating with the local authorities.

Last week, the NTSB opened a probe into an incident in which a Model S caught fire after crashing into a wall in Florida.

A 48-year-old German driver died last Thursday when his vehicle hit a barrier on a highway in the southern Swiss canton of Ticino, before flipping over and bursting into flames.

Two 18-year-olds were trapped in the vehicle and killed in the flames.

Musk said "the probability of an accident with autopilot is just less", and he insisted the vehicle had functioned exactly as it was created to in the California crash. "It is not a self-driving system", Musk said.

The safety agency has yet to announce whether it will be looking into the Utah crash. "And (the Tesla driver) could be facing a citation for failing to maintain control of her vehicle".
