Indonesian police have shot dead four sword-wielding men who attacked a police headquarters in Sumatra, killing one officer, the latest in a spate of militant attacks across the Muslim-majority country.

Two officers were wounded in the attack, while another was killed after one of the perpetrators tried to escape and crashed into the officer, he said. "Suddenly people wearing masks got out and stabbed police officers at the scene", said Doddy Vladimir, Tribun Pekanbaru reporter.

Local media said one attacker may have had a bomb strapped to his body but police have not confirmed the reports.

"Four have been shot to death and one fled", said spokesman Setyo Wasisto.

It was not clear if Wednesday's incident was linked to the earlier attacks in Surabaya, Indonesia's second biggest city, which have been claimed by the Daesh group.

Its worst-ever attack was the 2002 Bali bombings that killed more than 200 people, including locals and foreign tourists.

In the ensuing chaos, at least two suspected terrorists, both wearing balaclavas, were spotted getting out of the vehicle wielding sharp weapons and attacking police officers.

The next day, members of another family blew themselves up at a police station in the city, wounding 10. Both groups have pledged allegiance to IS, they said.

Police suspect they were carried out by a cell of the Islamic State-inspired group Jemaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), an umbrella organization on a U.S. State Department terrorist list that is reckoned to have drawn hundreds of Indonesian sympathizers of Islamic State.

They followed a deadly prison riot staged by Islamist prisoners at a high-security jail near Jakarta last week.
