United States and China still "very far apart" on trade, says United States ambassador

The United States is not seeking a trade war with China and top US officials are looking to make a deal with Beijing, White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said on Tuesday as talks between the two nations were set to resume.

China said Monday it is sending an envoy to the United States this week for talks aimed at cooling a trade dispute that threatens to upend markets from soybeans to steel, and welcomed comments by President Donald Trump hinting at a possible easing of sanctions on embattled Chinese telecoms firm ZTE. "Everyone is looking for some kind of deal", he told Politico in an interview, adding that no agreement had been reached yet.

U.S. Ambassador to China Terry Branstad, who was at the Beijing talks, said earlier on Tuesday the United States wants a timetable on how China will open up its markets to U.S. exports as the two countries are still not close to resolving trade frictions. "It's not clear, of course, if he's planning to really reverse it or think of a solution in a larger context, but it is something that is just out of the norm", said Amanda DeBusk, the chair of the global trade and government regulations practice at the firm Dechert, LLP. A high-powered US delegation met for a second day of talks with Chinese officials on defusing tensions that are propelling the world's largest two economies toward a trade war.

The quickest way to combat the trade imbalance is with tariffs, but the danger of USA imposed tariffs is that China, among other countries, will react with their own tariffs, which will in turn spark an all-out trade war that threatens the health of the global economy. Washington has proposed imposing tariffs on up to $150 billion in Chinese products. It would reduce USA gross domestic product by almost 3 billion dollars and destroy 134,000 American jobs annually, according to a new study recently released by the federation and the Consumer Technology Association. "Stay tuned!" Trump tweeted on Tuesday. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said much the same on Monday.

This week's meetings follow U.S.

At the Beijing talks, the Trump administration handed China a list of hard-line demands that trade experts said could make it even more hard to resolve the trade disputes.

"We're still very far apart", he said. "The more we can work things out, the better it's going to be not just for USA and China, but for the entire world economy", he said.

As part of this, they also entered into an agreement with the USA government.
