Forced arbitration agreements have been criticized because they allow companies to silence victims by making them settle disputes out of public courts. He was hired last August amid a wave of revelations and allegations about rampant sexual harassment in Uber's workforce, a cover-up of a massive data breach, dirty tricks and stolen trade secrets.
There is no publicly available data for the number of sexual assaults by Uber, Lyft, or other rideshare companies.
The news came one day ahead of a court-mandated deadline for Uber to respond in a proposed class action lawsuit filed by law firm Wigdor LLP on behalf of nine women accusing drivers of sexual assault.
In addition, Lyft said it will no longer require confidentiality agreements in exchange for settlements - a change Uber also made. Uber argued that the women will have to bring other claims in the suit, including unfair business practices, to an arbitrator. "This vicious cycle perpetuates senseless violence".
But she said in a written statement Tuesday that Uber continues to fight against class-action status for the 14 women she represents, showing it is "not fully committed to meaningful change" because victims are more likely to pursue claims as part of a group.
"This policy extends to passengers, drivers and Lyft employees", it said. It's an effort to reassure its riders and address concerns that it hadn't done enough to keep crooks from using its service to prey on potential victims.
It may also spur more complaints.
"Whether to find closure, seek treatment, or become advocates for change themselves, survivors will be in control of whether to share their stories", wrote Tony West, Uber's chief legal officer, in a blog post.
"I want to thank [CNN] for the reporting that you've done on this issue", West added.
The ride-sharing company also told CNN that it planned to publish a "safety transparency report" that will tally the number of sexual assaults or other incidents related to its service.
