Asteroid 2010 WC9 Making Among 'Closest' Earth Passes

'Lost' asteroid to pass closely May 15 'Lost' Asteroid Will Graze Past Earth in Two Days At An Incredible Speed
| 15 May, 2018, 22:44

This is the closest this particular asteroid, known as 2010 WC9, has gotten to Earth in 300 years.

The space rock is larger than the estimated size of the Chelyabinsk meteor before the latter hit Earth's atmosphere in 2013. According to EarthSky, the space rock measures between 197 and 427 feet across.

There have been several instances where an asteroid has skimmed past Earth.

The 2018 GE3 asteroid was discovered just one day before it skimmed past Earth in what scientists called a "surprise" flyby.

The 2010 WC9 will be the closest near-miss this year as it passes our planet at a distance of 126,419 miles - around half the distance to the moon.

This asteroid does not pose a threat to our planet, however, and is expected to pass safely, making its closest approach at 22:05 UTC.

It is being said that the space rock has completed its orbit and now comes back to the Earth.

It was first observed at Catalina Sky Survey on May 7 and it's due to make a close approach on May 16, at a distance of 1.5million km from Earth. The 2010 sign means that it was initially detected in 2010, particularly on November 30, by the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona.

Though asteroid 2010 WC9 isn't all that big in relative terms, it is significantly larger than the Chelyabinsk meteor that entered Earth's atmosphere and exploded 19 miles above Russia's Chelyabinsk Oblast region with the force of 500,000 tons of TNT. But astronomy enthusiasts lacking telescopes will still be able to see it; Northholt Branch Observatories in London will be livestreaming the event on Facebook. Nearly eight years later, astronomers realized that an asteroid they temporarily called ZJ99C60 was actually 2010 WC9 returning. The asteroid will move pretty fast (30 seconds of arc per minute).

"Our Astrometric information while this occurs, but the motion of the asteroid will happen every five minutes", explained Wells.

"Once enough data had been collected by us, and other observatories, it soon became apparent that it wasn't a new asteroid".
