US Ambassador Will Not Work Full Time in New Jerusalem Embassy

Ides of May Gazans rally near Israel border in blockade-busting campaign
| 12 May, 2018, 21:37

Over the last month and a half, tens of thousands of people have participated in the demonstration with approximately 5,000 Palestinians gathering near the border wall east of Khan Younis on Friday, according to Israel Defense Forces estimates. "This is nothing more, or less than a recognition of reality".

Friday's killings raised to 53 the death toll of unarmed Palestinian protesters who have lost their lives by Israeli forces' live fire since protests began along the Gaza border on March 30.

One Palestinian protestor was killed and at least 700 wounded by the Israeli military on the seventh consecutive Friday of demonstrations at the Israeli border fence with Gaza.

Israeli forces have drawn worldwide censure for using live fire against the protesters, most of whom appeared unarmed and did not seem to present any immediate threat to the lives of the soldiers.

Not far from the Gaza border - and visible from the Great March of Return - roughly 50 Israelis demonstrated, carrying and signs and banners, against the siege of Gaza and against the shooting of civilians.

Israel warned it would prevent any border breach, sticking to open-fire policies, including targeting "main instigators" and those approaching the fence.

The question of Jerusalem is one of the thorniest issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Diana Buttu, a Ramallah-based political analyst and former advisor to President Mahmoud Abbas and Palestinian negotiators, said the Palestinians, who have waited decades for the world to finally enforce the hundreds of United Nations resolutions condemning Israel's systematic abuses of Palestinian rights in Jerusalem and beyond, "are now being rewarded for their patience by Trump handing Israel everything it wants on a silver platter".

Israel says it has a right to defend its border and has accused Hamas of using the protests as a cover for attacking the border.

Israeli reporter Alon Ben David tweeted that the IDF is increasing the amount of troops present around the Gaza strip and in the West Bank by adding three brigades for the upcoming week.

Sinwar was freed in a prisoner swap with Israel in 2011 and was elected as the movement's Gaza chief in 2017.

"What's the problem if hundreds of thousands storm this fence which is not a border of a state?" Congress passed a law in the 1990s requiring that the embassy be moved to Jerusalem, and other presidents had promised to do so, only to exercise a waiver in the law permitting them to hold off, for fear that it would set off a backlash and complicate peace negotiations. Israel's position has generally been that Palestinian refugees and their descendants would become citizens of a Palestinian state at the culmination of the peace process, just as Jews who fled or were forced out of Middle Eastern countries by hostile governments became citizens of Israel.
