Facebook Planning to Push Ads on WhatsApp Soon

Instagram quietly launches payments for commerce After Messenger and Whatsapp, Facebook spotted testing Instagram payments feature to take on rival Snapchat
| 07 May, 2018, 15:02

Instagram also claims that since the payment details are already stored in the new application, online shoppers can get a seamless experience and view the record history of the number of purchases made by them via the new tool.

A sample of businesses in the United Kingdom and the USA are now accepting in-app payments for services, such as booking restaurant tables or taking hair appointments, without needing users to leave the app.

'We plan to continue evolving Instagram business profiles. It's unclear if peer-to-peer payments might come to Instagram, but having a way to add a credit or debit card on file is a critical building block to that feature.

Select users of the social media site have begun to notice the addition of a payment button to the app's existing booking feature.

Unlike the Messenger and WhatsApp payments feature, the Instagram feature isn't about peer-to-peer payments.

Keep one thing in mind though, this feature is in the process of being rolled out to everyone as we speak.

Instagram: Is the Payments Feature the First Step Towards Native Commerce?

To enable the update, Instagram users must have a business profile, sell physical goods and have a product catalogue through Facebook or an integrated partner. They will also be able to make the payment for the booked table via Instagram. Insta Payments feature will just let users shop directly from the brands' profile.

WhatsApp has been growing ever since, with billions of users on the platform; one could imagine how much revenue could be generated by showing some ads to its users.

While Instagram has started testing its payments feature only now, rival Snapchat had started testing something very similar in February this year. Now at F8 Developer Conference, Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg has acknowledged the departure of the Koum.

"As 800 million use Instagram each month to discover and follow their passions, more and more people are using it to connect with businesses they love", Instagram said in a blog post celebrating reaching 25 million listed business previous year.

If Instagram brings this in a full-fledged manner for all its users, this will change the buying patterns of a lot of young users.
