UAE to face Bahrain in 2019 Asian Cup opener

AFC Asian Cup Draw : As It Happened Asian Cup 2019: India drawn in Group A with hosts UAE, Bahrain and Thailand
| 06 May, 2018, 00:27

The Philippine Azkals were again put in a hard predicament after being placed in Group C for their maiden appearance in the Asian Cup slated January in the United Arab Emirates.

However, debutants Philippines will have to do it the hard way if they are to qualify from the group stage after being put in Group C, where they will meet giants Korea Republic, China PR and fellow new boys Kyrgyz Republic.

One of the top matches at the 2019 Asian Cup will see Qatar locking horns with World Cup-bound Saudi Arabia.

In the other Asian Cup groupings, UAE, Thailand, India, and Bahrain make up Group A, while defending champions Australia, Syria, Palestine, and Jordan make up Group B.

Qatar were drawn with neighbouring Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and North Korea in Group E of next year's Asian Cup to be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The last time India participated in the continental tournament, in 2011, they were thrashed by South Korea, Australia and Bahrain, returning home bruised and battered after conceding a barrage of goals.

Four-time champions Japan take on Uzbekistan, Oman and Turkmenistan in Goup F while China's hopes of a first-ever Asian Cup title will hinge on advancing from Group C, which also features South Korea, Kyrgyzstan and the Philippines.

Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium and the Khalifa Bin Zayed Stadium will host the matches in Al Ain and Sharjah Stadium in the Emirate of Sharjah.

This is for the first time that an Indian footballer was asked to be associated with the draw ceremony for the Asian championship.

This will be India's fourth appearance in the Asian Cup.

Designed and made by world renowned silversmiths Thomas Lyte of London, the new trophy eloquently communicates the powerful spirit of football's second oldest continental football competition.

The top two pots consist of teams who has progressed to the final round of the 2018 FIFA World Cup for AFC countries.
