He was shot and killed during an exchange of gunfire with a possible homicide suspect at the Garden Quarter Apartments.

"It is another tragic loss for the Wabash Valley and the Terre Haute Police Department", Sgt. Joe Watts of the Indiana State Police said in announcing the officer's death. Adamson says the suspect in that homicide shot the officer.

It has been a somber day for law enforcement officials in the Wabash Valley as fallen officer Pitts has been transported to a funeral home.

Terre Haute Police Chief John Plasse said the suspect was wounded in a shootout with officers from the city and other agencies, then barricaded himself inside the building. At that time, the name of the suspect is expected to be released.

As they approached the apartment on Linwood Street, the officers were fired upon nearly immediately and they returned fire, city Police Chief John Plasse said.

Terre Haute police spokesman Ryan Adamson says the city police officer's investigation of a homicide led him to the apartment complex on the city's west side.

After the shooting, police engaged in a standoff with the barricaded suspect, also not named on Friday, that lasted until just before 9:20 p.m.

Upon finding the man, police did call for a medic.

State Police Sgt. Joe Watts Tweeted the officer had succumbed to his injuries. We are deeply saddened by the loss of our officer, and ask that you keep our entire community in your prayers. He says the shooter was a suspect in that homicide.

A vigil is planned Saturday night at the Vigo County Courthouse. They believe the suspect remains inside.

The dying was the primary within the line of responsibility by an officer with the Terre Haute Police Division since July 11, 2011.
