Turkey's main opposition party on Friday nominated Muharrem Ince, a firebrand member of parliament, as its candidate for the snap presidential elections set for June 24.

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said lawmakers of the Justice and Development Party, or AKP, agreed to back Erdogan during a meeting on Thursday.

"Some people may look for their presidential candidates by microscope, but we have already decided on our candidate".

Turkey's two largest opposition parties will today announce their candidates for the historic June 24 presidential election. The head of CHP, Kemal kılıçdaroğlu before the start of work to determine the nominees said he was ready to offer his candidacy in case of need, but did not insist on their participation in the elections.

Last month, Erdoğan moved up the presidential and parliamentary elections to more than a year early.

Although Iyi Party leader and former interior minister Meral Aksener has registered to run against Erdogan to be the next president of Turkey, the CHP has yet to name its candidate.

Ince stated that he would take the country back to the parliamentary system if he gets elected as president. Explaining his decision, the Turkish President claimed that it would ensure a swift transition to the presidential system of government, which had been chosen by a slight majority of Turks participating in the constitutional referendum on April 16.
