The Boy Scouts Change Their Name After 108 Years

Boy Scouts announce name change as girls are coming on board. (Hint: 'Boy' is not in new moniker.) Taking the 'Boy' Out of Boy Scouts: Boy Scouts of America Officially Deletes Its Identity

The Boy Scouts of America have announced a new name for the iconic Boy Scouts program: Scouts BSA.

Understandably, the Girl Scouts of America is not happy about this change.

So far, more than 3,000 girls have joined an estimated 170 Cub Scout groups that are taking part in the first step of the new policy.

The Western Massachusetts Council is among those participating in the Early Adopter Program, which allowed girls to register for Cub Scouts beginning in mid-January.

"A program for girls age 11 to 17 will be announced in the coming year with a projected introduction in 2019."
The program's rebranding as the Scouts BSA, they announced Wednesday.

"Girls can be involved in everything that boys get to do", Zoie said. A former Boy Scout and father of two Girl Scouts doesn't like the idea of combining genders.

"They do fun activities like hiking, camping, and fishing and they build stuff", says Cub Scout Riley Winkelman.

Though the decline in numbers is one of the reasons for the change, BSA is also trying to accommodate a new generation of families.

Since a "soft launch" in January, which allowed local Cub Scout packs to "opt-in" to admitting girls, about a dozen girls have joined packs under the Mid-America Council, Mehaffey said.

The Boy Scouts will change their name to "Scouts BSA" to reflect the fact that more and more girls are now joining their ranks, NBC News is reporting.

Pittman says after 108 years of the Boy Scouts' existence, it was time for a change.

The Boy Scouts said membership stands at about 2.3 million - down from 2.6 million in 2013 and more than 4 million in previous peak years, the AP said.

Kirk said the changes will not be forced upon any troop. We have always been about girls, and if it is getting them ready for the wilderness or the boardroom, we're about girls leadership.

Boy Scouts of America says it wants to create equal opportunities, but Woodings says they're already there.

Information from the Associated Press was included in this report.

And, it's not going to sit well with Girls Scouts of the U.S. whose CEO, Sylvia Acevedo, has referred to the membership change in media reports as an attempted "hostile takeover".
