Liverpool are "lucky" to be reaping the rewards of a matured Mohamed Salah at Anfield, according to manager Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool still have two Premier League games to play this season and Salah will most likely be wrapped up in cotton wool ahead of the showdown with Real Madrid on May 26.

The Egypt global narrowly topped the poll of the 400-strong FWA membership ahead of Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, the margin understood to be less than 20 votes. Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane was placed third.

Salah adds the individual gong to the Professional Footballers' Association's (PFA) Players' Player of the Year award, having also beaten De Bruyne to that one.

Salah becomes the first African ever to win the award and will be presented with the trophy May 10 at an event in London.

"It's been the tightest call since 1968/69, when there was a dead heat between Tony Book of Manchester City and Derby's Dave Mackay", FWA chief Patrick Barclay said.

When you've scored 42 goals in a season where you've started 43 times for your team, it makes flawless sense that bookies aren't going to start handing out incentives to get people betting on a man who, let's face it, is going to score.

Salah will head to the World Cup in Russian Federation in June to play for Egypt who have been drawn with the hosts, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in Group A.

You know you've hit the big-time when you've got your own doppelganger and Mo Salah now has his own back home in Egypt. He is also the first African to receive the award and we congratulate him on a magnificent season'.

No sportsman in Egypt has ever commanded the adulation and respect Salah has enjoyed since joining Liverpool previous year from Italian club Roma.

Liverpool defender Alberto Moreno claims that teammate Mohamed Salah has only been training at "20%" in an attempt to avoid injury.

Salah will now look to fire Liverpool to Champions League glory after the Reds beat Roma to reach the final.

The 25-year-old, who will represent his country at this summer's World Cup in Russian Federation, netted a brace in the first leg which finished 5-2 to Jurgen Klopp's side.

He has matched the records of Alan Shearer, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Suarez - who all scored 31 goals in a season - with two games remaining.
