Storm Kills at Least 72 in India

Dust storms in northern India uprooted trees, electricity poles, and left many without power on May 3.

The Meteorological department has issued warnings for further thunderstorm and gusty winds in parts of UP, around 30 districts, upto May 5.

'Saddened by the loss of lives due to dust storms in various parts of India. He said contigency funds had been released to the three district administrations. Of these, 36 died in Agra alone. The falling trees and electric poles caused the maximum accidents, leaving nearly 100 people injured, Yadav said.

More than 1,000 electricity pylons were destroyed which deprived Bharatpur from power supply. That was accompanied by 126 km/hr storm winds.

More than a hundred people were killed in northern Indian after fierce dust storms lashed several densely populated areas.

In addition to Agra, the other affected districts were Bijnor, Bareli, Saharanpur, Pilibhit, Firozabad, Chitrakoot, Muzaffarnagar, Rae Bareli and Unnao.

A severe dust storm followed by thunder showers hit parts of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan overnight, killing over 70 people and leaving a trail of destruction. Nine people died in neighbouring Dholpur in the high-speed dust storm that started around 7pm. Schools in Alwar are now closed, reported BBC.


"Chief Secretary Rajive Kumar has spoken to Commissioner Agra division and directed that relief be distributed by the evening and senior officers visit the injured in hospitals", Avanish Awasthi, Principal Secretary Information, said.

As reported by Hindustan Times, 12 people were killed in Bharatpur, four in Alwar, 11 in Dholpur and one each in Jhunjhunu and Bikaner. In Uttarakhand, the rains affected the Char Dham pilgrimage with roads being blocked with debris.

The Press Trust of India news agency said at least 27 others had died and another 100 were injured in the western Indian state of Rajasthan.

'We can confirm at least 46 deaths, 41 injuries from around 40 of the state's 75 districts, ' T.P. Gupta of the Uttar Pradesh relief commissioner's office told AFP. Villages in the Jaunpur area near Mussoorie were also reeling in the dark.

It also reported the highest number of injured: 35. The Safdarjung observatory, whose recording is considered the official figure for Delhi, recorded 13.4mm rainfall. "They told me that their children were playing in the house when a wall collapsed on them", Pachouri said.

Extremely hot weather is in store as well, with temperatures expected to exceed 110 degrees through Saturday before temperatures moderate to normal levels - 105 degrees - early next week, AccuWeather said.
