Cowboys TE Jason Witten retires, to join ESPN as analyst

Jason Witten reportedly offered $4-4.5 million by ESPN, more than twice his NFL max, and another network may be in play Report: Jason Witten mulling offer from second network

Witten told the Cowboys he was considering the offer last week.

Witten had every intention on returning, until he was offered the job at ESPN.

Archer cites multiple sources for the news, which comes right on deadline: on Sunday, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported that Witten would decide by Wednesday whether to retire or keep playing.

The decision appears to have been made.

Witten wrestled with the decision for the past week, alternating nearly hourly between taking the job and playing a record 16th season for the Cowboys, sources said.

The 11-time Pro Bowler has been contemplating the decision to retire for the last week before finally making it official on Thursday.

Witten reportedly could make somewhere in the neighborhood of $4.5 million for his upcoming work on the Monday Night Football broadcast, which is actually more money than his football contract called for in base pay for the season ($1.05 million). He's the franchise's all-time receiving leader, having caught 1,152 passes for 12,448 yards and 68 touchdowns over the course of his illustrious career. He ranks fourth in receptions all time behind only Jerry Rice, Tony Gonzalez and Larry Fitzgerald. Dallas will be left with Geoff Swaim, Rico Gathers and rookie Dalton Schultz at tight end. He and Tony Gonzalez are the only National Football League tight ends with at least 1,000 catches and 10,000 yards. More importantly, his presence in their locker room.

As he steps away, Witten's legacy with the team is secure. Team owner Jerry Jones has spoken with him in hopes that he'll re-think his decision.
