WhatsApp to Ban People Under 16 From Using Service in EU

How Europe's New Privacy Rules Favor Google and Facebook New EU Privacy Rules to Aid Google, Facebook: WSJ

WhatsApp will prompt users to confirm if their age is at least 16 and they will be asked to accept new terms of service and an updated privacy policy in the coming weeks.

WhatsApp, a freeware and cross-platform messaging and Voice over IP service, announced it will increase the current age requirement for European Union users as the messaging service updates its rules to meet forthcoming General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which comes into force on 25 May. Its parent company Facebook will be asking teens between 13 and 15 to nominate a parent or guardian to give permission for them to share information on the platform. The key updates in the privacy policy, according to Twitter, allow for more focus on the controls users have over their personal data, and how the users' public data is shared broadly and instantly, including through the developer tools.

The existing rules allowed anyone 13 years and older to use the app.

But unlike WhatsApp, which will only apply the new law to its European users, Facebook plans on rolling out changes for its users worldwide.

This comes as part of a series of changes Facebook is making to its service with the advent of the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) in Europe next month.

Facebook is also set to change its rules. The company is enforcing this rules strictly ahead of the introduction of new data privacy rules in Europe next month.

When the feature is made available, you'll be able to use it by going to Settings, and tapping Account, Request account info, and Request report.

Facebook now is under fire for its sharing of personal data from their users with advertising companies and gathering this information without any warning.

"Every message and call is secured by end-to-end encryption so that no one, not even WhatsApp, can read or listen to your conversations". The privacy policies of platforms - be it Twitter, Facebook, or anyone else - are going to be under greater scrutiny, but how much data the companies are still collecting is hard to ascertain.

WhatsApp, part of social media network Facebook, ensured that all messages within the platform have end-to-end encryption after reports emerged past year that its messages can be intercepted by the authorities.
