The Senate Committee on the Judiciary gave the stamp of approval to a bill that would protect special counselRobert Mueller from being fired while he continues to investigate Russian influence in the 2016 presidential election.
Photo Special counsels such as Robert S. Mueller III would be able to appeal their firing to a panel of judges under the legislation a Senate committee advanced on Thursday.
"I hope that Senator McConnell will listen to the growing crescendo of voices on both sides of the aisle calling for this legislation and bring it to the floor for a vote as quickly as possible", Booker said in a statement.
However, a majority of voters - 52 percent - say they oppose impeaching Trump even if he fires the special counsel.
That bipartisan bill would define who is allowed to fire Mueller - or any future special counsel. Although the bill doesn't expressly bar the president from firing the special counsel, "There's a robust debate among legal scholars across the political spectrum as to whether the bill nevertheless goes too far", the Atlantic reports. The bill would ensure that the special counsel's staff and investigative materials would be preserved in the interim.
It's in Trump's interest to not fire Mueller because the investigation will likely vindicate him, Hatch suggested.
Experts say if it reached the Senate floor, the bill is unlikely to get the 60 votes needed to pass - and probably has even less of a chance in the House. All the Democrats on the committee supported the measure.
Despite the bipartisan vote, there's still no clear passage for the legislation to move forward beyond the Judiciary Committee. In all, four GOP senators supported the legislation, including Sens.
The committee considered amendments to the bill on Thursday morning, including one from Grassley that the panel unanimously adopted that would require the special counsel to submit a final report to Congress about the investigation's findings and decisions to or to not prosecute, as well as any changes in the special counsel's jurisdiction. Mike Lee of Utah and Hatch as an alternative to replace the text of the special counsel bill with a "sense of the Senate resolution".
The legislation has divided Republicans, pitting a handful of senators who believe in protecting Mueller against others who have leveled a variety of objections to the bill - including questions about its constitutionality and whether it is necessary.
